Ask any non-Aussie what they associate with Sydney Ask any non-Aussie what they associate with Sydney and they'll probably say: the beach. The harbour. The opera house. Surfers. Tans. Sydney is definitely all of those things. But it's also this: Breweries inside crumbling historical brick buildings. Tattooed, mustachioed fixie riders. Avo toast cafes in converted motorcycle repair shops. Street art adorning the facades of quirky thrift shops. Newtown, a Sydney neighborhood that's miles from any beach, is one of many inland areas where you'll find an offbeat alternative culture similar to that of Bed-Stuy or Southeast Portland. We loved basing ourselves here not just because it's a big transit hub, but also because it offered endless cool nightlife, bookstore and restaurant options. Even though I'm a beach girl at heart, I loved seeing this less-touristed side of Sydney, where we were surrounded by university students, creative professionals and the sorts of chill young parents who bring their babies with them when they go brewery-hopping down in Sydenham. Here’s your itinerary for the perfect day in the Here’s your itinerary for the perfect day in the idyllic beach suburb of Manly, where I’ll forever dream about living someday!

Step 1: Take the 20-minute @transdevferriessyd from Circular Quay to Manly Step 2: Rent e-bikes from @manlybikes Step 3: Cruise up a crazy steep hill to Sydney Harbour National Park, home to a historical quarantine station where immigrants were once held when they arrived in the city. Explore trails leading to an old cemetery with epic views and a “hanging swamp.” Step 4: Make your way downhill toward Manly Beach, stopping along the multi-use path to watch the surfers—there’s some seriously impressive talent out on those waves. Step 5: Grab a nourishing, colorful lunch at @dolceterramanly, where you choose your own portion size (XL for me, thanks) and pay by the kilo. Step 6: Explore the Queenscliff Rock Pool and the Manly Wormhole, a cave that takes you to a great overlook of the beach. Step 7: Turn in the bikes and keep exploring by foot. Grab a coffee at @marketlanemanly, browse the stacks at Desire Books and grab some surf shop merch at @manlylongboardco. Admire the colorful building facades on The Corso. Head south on Marine Parade toward Fairy Bower Sea Pool, one of Sydney’s most picturesque rock pools. Whoever first said "the journey is the destination Whoever first said "the journey is the destination" must have been riding on a Sydney ferry! Hundreds of public boats cross Sydney Harbor every day. The system comprises 10 lines and 38 wharves across the city. That means it's possible to take 10 different cheap, scenic "cruises" around this drop-dead gorgeous city, and to conclude each "cruise" at 38 different vibrant neighborhoods and sandy beaches. Instagram vs. reality: Sydney edition 🦘 After Instagram vs. reality: Sydney edition 🦘 After two weeks in dusty, dry Western Australia and a week in the northern tropics, it was odd to come back to Sydney—a city in the depth of "winter" and still recovering from the devastating floods we'd seen earlier in the month. The sun was out and the highs were in the 60s, but the mud lingered. We gamely squelched through muck on the Bradleys Head Walking Track, a lovely five-mile path that winds along the north shore of Sydney Harbor. We spent our last week in Australia exploring different corners of this beautiful, diverse city—from the north shore to the beaches to the inner suburbs and even farther afield. What we discovered was that even in its cooler off season, this place is nothing short of paradise. We kept joking that winter in Sydney felt a lot like winter in the California beach town where I grew up, except with more cool culture, better transit and more delicious restaurants! If you’re a beach bum and you haven’t yet visi If you’re a beach bum and you haven’t yet visited Australia, wyd mate? On our last day in Queensland, Ian and I hopped on a ferry from Cairns to picture-perfect Fitzroy Island. While the boat ride is pricey and frustratingly touristy (the staff tried to sell us all manner of things, from cheap snorkel gear to souvenir couple photos), the island itself boasts lots of free activities. After docking, we kicked off the morning with a heart-pumping hike to the highest point on the island to get our bearings. Back at sea level, we made our way to Nudey Beach (paradoxically NOT clothing optional!) for a lounge in the sun and some seriously good snorkeling. We capped off the day with a drink at the island’s only bar. My favorite part of the day, aside from seeing all the colorful fish? Portrait of two happy, exhausted divers 🧜‍♀ Portrait of two happy, exhausted divers 🧜‍♀️ The Great Barrier Reef is the great raison d’etre of Cairns. The world’s largest coral reef system is home to a rainbow of unique plant and animal life, attracting more than 2 million international visitors each year. Some tourists opt to snorkel the reef for just a couple of hours; others, like us, go all in. With @prodivecairns as our guides, Ian and I spent three days at sea, spotting dozens of fish species and marveling at the colorful coral. As a certified open water diver, I was lucky enough to join 10 dives and to experience night diving for the first time (a little scary, a lot thrilling). Ian, meanwhile, studied for his certification right there on the boat. Now we’re both qualified to dive anywhere in the world! #couplegoals If you’re ever in far northern Queensland, do NOT skip the Great Barrier Reef. As far as I’m concerned, it’s one of the great wonders of the world.
